Northern Stage Youth Education Programs 2010-2011 WORKSHOPS & CLASSES The Actor As Storyteller (Age 14-18) with Producing Director Catherine Doherty Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $50 Learn the "inside" techniques of acting from an experienced actor and director in this fun, hands-on workshop! Participants will be asked to prepare a story to work with during this workshop.
Get the Gig! (Age 10-18) with Artistic Director Brooke Ciardelli Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Cost: $50 Students will work on short scenes, studying natural and believable acting for auditioning.
Improv Lab (Age 10-18) with professional New York actors and cast members of the Northern Stage production of the hit comedy The 39 Steps Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $50 Learn how to play it for laughs! Gain a better understanding of comic timing through scene work and improvisation. The Road to Oz (Age 10-18) Musical Theater Workshop with the professional actors/singers/dancers from the Northern Stage production of The Wizard of Oz November 21, 2010, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $50 Working professionals share their tips on putting together acting, singing and dancing to really "sell" a song onstage! Timing Is Everything (Age 14-18) Comedy Acting Workshop with Catherine Doherty Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $50 Northern Stage’s comedy expert guides students through the steps required to make comedy work, from physicality and comic timing to working with other actors to make comedy work! Scene and Be Seen (Age 14-18) with Catherine Doherty Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Cost: $50 Students will work on short scenes, studying character development and natural, believable acting. Play Making (Age 14-18) with internationally renowned director Giles Ramsay, director of the Northern Stage production of The Rainmaker Saturday, March 19, 2011, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $50 Giles Ramsay has directed all over the world, and this is the only chance this year to learn how he combines techniques from different cultures to help tell universal stories on stage. That's Entertainment! (Age 10-18) Musical Theater Workshop with the professional actors/singers/dancers from the Northern Stage production of Evita Thursday, April 28, 2011, 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Cost: $50 Working professionals share their tips on putting together acting, singing and dancing to really "sell" a song onstage! Northern Stage will continue to offer private lessons and classes in Vocal Coaching and Acting. Rates vary. Please call for more information. SCHOOL VACATION CAMPS: Bright Lights, Broadway! February 14-18, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Learn how to become a true "triple threat"—acting, singing and dancing—in this fun and fast-paced week-long musical theater experience! Shakespearean Wild April 18 – 22, 2011, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Using the text of Romeo & Juliet, students will work with highly trained Shakespeare performers and teachers to understand the language and stagecraft of the greatest playwright ever! S.T.A.R. (Student Theater Arts Resource) S.T.A.R. is a student-run, parent-coordinated program for dedicated young theater practitioners ages 10 – 18 (younger with prior permission) to develop their skills in acting and behind-the-scenes skills. . Northern Stage will provide classroom space to S.T.A.R. on Wednesdays from 4:00 –7:00 p.m. in the Miller Arts Building in White River Junction, VT for weekly rehearsals and meetings. Northern Stage will also provide use of the Briggs Opera House for one week (May 16 – May 22) for S.T.A.R. to present scene work or a full production. Producing Director Catherine Doherty and Artistic Director Brooke Ciardelli will provide advice, guidance and leadership for work sessions on May 4, 6, 11 and 13. Artistic staff will be available to suggest material and help guide the student's work. There is NO CHARGE for this program. J.O.B. (Junior Observer Benefits) This new program offers opportunities to participate in Northern Stage’s professional productions in a variety of technical positions, as well as observerships, for ages 10 - 18. The J.O.B. member will work side-by-side with industry professionals. These opportunities come at no cost to the participant, and each young professional will report directly to a department head on the Northern Stage production team. Each participant in J.O.B. will receive free tickets to the show on which they work.
