GENERAL
What is the attire for a play?
There is no dress code at Northern Stage. Theatergoers wear everything from jeans to suits to the little black dress.
Where do you find the Actors?
Most of our cast is comprised of Equity and Non-Equity actors from NYC. We also cast from Chicago and London. We strive to gather the perfect actors for each role and will go to great lengths to bring the best talent possible to Northern Stage.

What does it mean when I subscribe to a particular series (like the 3rd Thursday)?
Each show at Northern Stage plays for at least 3 weeks. If you subscribe to the 3rd Thursday Series, you will have tickets to the Thursday performance in the third week of the run. This DOES NOT necessarily mean it is the 3rd Thursday of the month (although usually it is).
Why do I get voice mail when I call?
Each call is important to us, and sometimes good service means we spend a bit longer on the phone with patrons. As a result, it is possible that our phone lines will be tied up. We check messages frequently and call back promptly. To make the process easier:
- Buy tickets online any time of the day or night via our SECURE connection at www.northernstage.org. There is no difference in price online, but special offers and discounts cannot be applied online.
- Make sure you leave a phone number, complete with area code. In some cases, we cannot tell from the phone number whether it is a Vermont or New Hampshire number.
- It's very helpful if you repeat the phone number.
- Don't be afraid to leave a detailed message. If you leave us specific information, we will be better prepared when we reach you. If you are exchanging tickets, give us the date you cannot attend and the date to which you would like switch. If you are buying tickets, be sure to leave the date and time of the show you wish to attend, as well as your seating preference.
- If you decide to call back, be sure to tell the person you reach that you left a message earlier so we don't call you back multiple times.
What happens if I am a subscription holder and cannot attend one of the productions during the season?
While you can exchange show dates within the run of one show, we cannot exchange tickets for one production to another (e.g., we cannot exchange Amadeus tickets for The 39 Steps tickets). We highly recommend selling/giving the tickets you cannot use to a friend or family member, who can then take advantage of your free subscriber exchanges to best use the tickets. That's also a great way to introduce someone new to Northern Stage!
You may also donate the tickets back to Northern Stage as a tax-deductible contribution. Northern Stage will issue you a letter with a receipt within 30 days of your gift.
If you accidentally missed your show, as a season subscriber, you have special wait list privileges! Simply come to the theater on another night of the same show, and, if we have seats, we will happily exchange your tickets at no additional charge. You can even call the Box Office in advance for a suggestion as to a good night to attend.
Please remember that we cannot issue refunds for any reason.
Why do I have to pay a $2 order fee even when I purchase tickets with cash or in person?
The ticket price pays for the performance you attend. The $2 fee per ticket covers the administrative costs of selling tickets. This fee helps cover the cost of computer purchase and maintenance, software licensing fees and personnel, among other things.
How can I get better subscription seats next year?
To upgrade your assigned subscription seats, please contact our Box Office Manager to discuss other options. All seating requests are accommodated whenever possible. If we are unable to accommodate your request this season, we will put you at the top of the wait list for your requested seats next season. Please bear in mind that the more popular the series, such as Press Pass Thursday or Athena Sunday, the harder it is to upgrade your seats.
Do my subscriber benefits apply to the other events at Northern Stage?
Being a subscriber to our 7-show mainstage series makes you a Northern Stage VIP and means we will supply you with special opportunities to buy tickets to additional events. Your subscriber benefits, such as free ticket exchanges, are applicable only to the series you purchase. We cannot extend your benefits to include special events, like staged readings or outside productions.
